1992

The Top 150 Hits of… 1992

Decided to take a break from more recent years and step back to the 90’s. 1992 was the first full year Billboard used the new, more accurate methods of compiling the Hot 100.

“Steel Bars” by Michael Bolton (#84) is the only song here that wasn’t released as a single. I remember thinking at the time how unfortunate that was as I was not a Bolton fan, this was one of the few songs of his that I liked, and I sure wasn’t going to buy his album to get it. I found out what I liked about it when I saw the writing credits: He co-wrote it with Bob Dylan.

Color Me Badd’s “Forever Love” (#71) was released as a single, but not until after it had already peaked at radio after 8 weeks on the airplay chart.

As will always be the case until radio-only songs were allowed on the Hot 100 in 1999, I used the airplay chart history for weeks in which a song was not on the main chart.

“Human Touch / Better Days” by Bruce Springsteen (#113) was a double a-sided single. Sales of the single plus airplay from both songs were combined for its Hot 100 point total every week. “Better Days” didn’t get a lot of airplay but what little it got surely enhanced the single’s chart performance. “Human Touch” would likely have been a few places lower on the year-end chart without it.

Boyz II Men set a new record for weeks at #1 with “End of the Road” (13 weeks). This had more to do with the new methodology than anything else. In fact that record would stand less than a year before it was broken again by Whitney Houston, then again by Boyz II Men two years after that, this time with Mariah Carey.

It wasn’t just #1 either. Turnover at the top of the chart slowed down considerably. In 1991, 102 songs made the top 10. In 1992, only 68 did. Before ’92, songs on this year-end list that peaked below #25 or so on the weekly chart were unusual. Post-’92, there are a few songs here that never made the top 40.

2010

The Top 150 Hits of… 2010

The Glee juggernaut continued its chart rampage throughout 2010. As with last time, I chose to combine all of the points from all of the charted songs for each ½ season and have them represented by whichever song was the biggest “hit” among them. Seasons 1.2 and 2.1 charted 40 songs each, the latter set being quite a bit more popular than the former. You can find their representatives at #s 41 and 69. Guest stars seemed to boost sales.

A lot of times the #1 song of any year will be way out in front of the pack. Not so here. True, #s 5 & 6 are separated by 125 points but the top 5 are pretty close together. The top 3 are all top chart performers in one way or another. “Tik Tok” had the most weeks at #1 in 2010 (9), “Just the Way You Are” had the most in the top 10 (22), and “Need You Now” had the most in the top 40 (50) and on the whole chart (60).

EDIT 2/4/14

Billboard published a new list of the top Hot 100 hits of all time. As "Tik Tok" was quite a bit higher on that list than "Just the Way You Are," and "Need You Now" didn't make the list at all, I rearranged the top 3 here.

I was paying so little attention to pop music in 2011 that it was only when I did the chart research for that year that I discovered that "If I Die Young" by the Band Perry had a second chart run that began 5 months after the conclusion of the first. Unlike the early 2000's hits of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, there was not a different mix released to the initial Country markets than the later Pop markets. As it's the exact same song, I combined the points from its combined 52 weeks for the 2011 list, removing it from this one, leaving room for another song at the bottom.

If I find out that the two chart runs were for different versions of the song, I'll be back to re-edit.

  1. Tik Tok – Ke$ha
  2. Just the Way You Are – Bruno Mars

2009

The Top 150 Hits of… 2009

This list goes to 151 because of a very special case. Glee debuted in 2009. In it’s first half-season before the Winter break, the cast put 25 songs on the chart: 20 of them for only 1 week, 3 for 2, 1 for 3, and the biggest “hit” of the lot, “Don’t Stop Believin’” lasted six weeks, including one week at #4. You can’t really call these one-week wonders “hits”, but the whole Glee thing needed to be represented somehow. They were too much of a presence on the chart to ignore. So what I did here, and what I will do in future lists, is combine all of the points for every song in the half-season and have it represented by whichever song was most successful. “Don’t Stop Believin’” represents the entirety of season 1.1 at #79 and the list is 151 places long so that we still have 150 real hits.

It was really hard to get a song to #1 in 2009 because the Black Eyed Peas monopolized that position for half the year. 12 weeks of “Boom Boom Pow” was followed by 14 weeks of “I Gotta Feeling.” That’s a record for consecutive weeks at #1. Usher is second with 20 in 2004, accomplished with “Yeah!” and “Burn.” But Usher holds the record for most weeks at #1 in a single year (28) when adding “My Boo” and “Confessions Part II” to the previous two songs.

Another record holder for 2009 is “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. It spent the most weeks ever on the Hot 100 (76).

2008

The Top 150 hits of… 2008

A few artists were still holding out on or experimenting with the digital medium in 2008. Kid Rock declined to put his material on iTunes at the time. So his big hit that year, “All Summer Long” was on the chart on the basis of airplay alone. The market stepped in to fill the void left by the absence of a digital single and two cover versions of the song made the chart, one after the other, on the strength of their sales, for a total of 20 weeks. I combined the points from the original and the covers to determine the placement of “All Summer Long” here (#56). The song was among the top 30 most played of the year and would likely have done the same on the combined chart had a digital single been available.

There were also 3 weeks in which “American Boy” by Estelle was removed from iTunes and a cover version made the chart. The nine points from that version’s 3 weeks didn’t make a difference in the song’s placement here (#42).

2007

The Top 150 Hits of… 2007

I took a few more liberties with this one than usual. For the Aug. 11, 2007 chart, Billboard changed how it formulated the Hot 100 ever so slightly. Unfortunately I do not have the article explaining the change, so in relating it to you I can only go by the effects I see.

Billboard had only been using digital sales data for a couple of years. In assigning point values for amount of sales vs. amount of airplay, airplay was getting the short end of the stick. Some songs that were among the top 20 most played couldn’t get into the top 40 on the Hot 100 if they weren’t selling well. Meanwhile, a strong selling single could make it to #1 with no airplay whatsoever. Something was altered to address the issue on that week in August.

When I started compiling this year-end list I noticed that songs from later in the year were way lower than their point totals would indicate they should be, according to Billboard. In fact, whenever such a dramatic discrepancy occurred, often up to 100 points, it was always a song that was popular post-August. So I made some adjustments.

That being said, here’s the list.
