The Top 150 Hits of… 2010
The Glee juggernaut continued its chart rampage throughout
2010. As with last time, I chose to combine all of the points from all of the
charted songs for each ½ season and have them represented by whichever song was
the biggest “hit” among them. Seasons 1.2 and 2.1 charted 40 songs each, the
latter set being quite a bit more popular than the former. You can find their
representatives at #s 41 and 69. Guest stars seemed to boost sales.
A lot of times the #1 song of any year will be way out in
front of the pack. Not so here. True, #s 5 & 6 are separated by 125 points
but the top 5 are pretty close together. The top 3 are all top chart performers
in one way or another. “Tik Tok” had the most weeks at #1 in 2010 (9), “Just
the Way You Are” had the most in the top 10 (22), and “Need You Now” had the
most in the top 40 (50) and on the whole chart (60).
EDIT 2/4/14
Billboard published a new list of the top Hot 100 hits of all time. As "Tik Tok" was quite a bit higher on that list than "Just the Way You Are," and "Need You Now" didn't make the list at all, I rearranged the top 3 here.
I was paying so little attention to pop music in 2011 that it was only when I did the chart research for that year that I discovered that "If I Die Young" by the Band Perry had a second chart run that began 5 months after the conclusion of the first. Unlike the early 2000's hits of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, there was not a different mix released to the initial Country markets than the later Pop markets. As it's the exact same song, I combined the points from its combined 52 weeks for the 2011 list, removing it from this one, leaving room for another song at the bottom.
If I find out that the two chart runs were for different versions of the song, I'll be back to re-edit.
