The Top 150 Hits of… 1989

“Bust a Move”? Really?!?!

Hey, I was surprised too. It only got as high as #7 on the weekly chart and was #42 on Billboard’s year-end list. As it turns out, it was another case of a faulty prediction on their part. “Bust a Move” had peaked in mid October and had dropped down to the twenties by the end of the chart year. There was no way they could have known that the song, already on the chart for 19 weeks, was going to hang around for another 20! That’s a total of 39 weeks, 10 weeks longer than the second longest run that year, achieved by “Wind Beneath My Wings.” and 15 weeks longer than the song at #2.

The same thing happened with a few other songs in this year, most notably, “Love Shack,” which is #14 on this list and #47 on Billboard’s.

I remember there being some controversy about “Wild Thing.” At the time of its #2 peak, it was the #1 selling single by a very wide margin. Some suggested there was something wrong with the way charts were constructed if this monster seller couldn’t make it to #1. And indeed there was. Such margins didn’t figure into Hot 100 methodology until the ’92 chart year. If they did, it would definitely have been a #1 hit, and placed higher on the year-end chart as well.
